The little park has been in place for a year or so. Upon reflection, I think it's been a nice addition. It's not been life-changing, but it hasn't been dire, either. I was ambivalent before, mostly because I thought the park was ugly. The original police barricades are gone and the asphalt is now covered with a sandy material that's rather pleasant. I'm not a huge fan of dayglo paint and the cold, white LED streetlight is ghastly, but on balance, this little Pavement to Park experiment has been sufficiently debugged to be an improvement rather than a detriment.

There is nothing wrong with this project, it doesn't do anything stupid like block a bike lane.

You should have stopped here.

Off to a great start!

First day, One of our fine and brilliant motorists sped by heading south and hooked a right on to San Jose north.

First night the logs were dumped six drunken hooligans were out the quite loudly jumping from stump to stump at 11pm.

Friday evening upon arrival home from work 11 bicyclists came whizzing by me as I got out of my vehicle faster than the cars used to. When I asked them to slow down I was told to F**K OFF!

Today (Sunday) I arrive home to find that a hit and run had been performed on my neighbors house by someone attempting to turn around.

All this in just the first week!

One can only wonder what the future holds.

Now before you go jumping on the band wagon thinking I am just a negative malcontent, I assure you I enjoy my life, Love my city, and think this project is completely half assed at best!

Have a wonderful Day!

3400 Cesar Chavez was a parking lot with the site of a vacant paint store. The prior use of the site was residential over commercial, which the new 3400 will restore. Residential over commercial is the preferred use for that stretch of Mission St.

A subsidized project would have been great, but money for it had not been allocated. In the current fiscal climate, who knows how many years the site would remain vacant?

The new condos will be much cheaper than expected when the project was approved, due to the burst real estate bubble. And several of the units will be subsidized. Plus the city will get much more property tax revenue than it would have from the parking lot.

As someone who lives on the other side of the Mission, Marc, you are unaware that many immediate neighbors supported 3400, especially as an alternative to a boarded up store with a parking lot in front.

Wow! I just read this whole page of comments after finding out about this proposed project through "Nature News from Jake Sigg". I guess I didn't expect to see the range of issues addressed here, but I think it is a healthy dialog, for the most part.

However, I need to say that not everyone who is white and not a native of San Francisco is economically advantaged. Although the points about class are valid, I believe that anyone who puts many volunteer hours into projects to improve the neighborhood they live in deserves accolades. Services for children, the poor, the elderly, Health Department funding, parks, greenspace, open space, street maintenance - ALL OF THESE are valuable and important. Social and economic justice issues are very complicated. Keep the dialog flowing, but please find some room to thank those who are DONATING their time in the effort to improve their neighborhood for all. If there is another project that you feel is more deserving, do you make an effort to donate YOUR time to that? Don't be like the Republicans in Washington, always tearing down, obstructing, criticizing and demonizing.

- from a white, educated, 50 year old, East Coast transplant, long-term renter with a low income who has donated 4,000 hours of his gay time over the past 15 years to the improvement of the Recreation and Park Department land next to the building where he lives.

Why does everything have to be linked to race, language and legality? GET A LIFE, Native, and accept that some people want to improve their lives - why else do we immigrants come to the Grand Old US of A?

@ Big John, You tried and you seem to be the only one that realizes what really goes on in your neighborhood. The description of the wind blowing on that corner makes sense to put a park there!! Sorry, Big John, I feel your pain.

@Neighbor & Neighbor, too, What is the length of time "Temporary Park"?

Where the People of Color that are not fluent in English, were they even consider in wheb sending out bi lingual literature of what is proposed of your "Temporary Park"?
Possibly because they may not be register voters or did your "Committee" even approach them?

Another loss for the true Native of this Beautiful City....

@Big John,

A lot of your questions were answered at last night's meeting

If I remember correctly, no planning permit is needed because the project is a Dept of Traffic project on City streets.

There is no legal requirement to mail local residents of the intended project, but if someone has a specific concern about an absentee owner or other interested party being made aware of the project, they can email Andres.

Emergency vehicle access will not be impeded as the gate can be driven over if necessary.

Andres Powers and Jane Martin (and maybe Gillian Gillett) have been in negotiation with SFFD, SFPD, St Lukes and all the relevant organizations to make sure that the proposed park meets with all their requirements.

Andres, Jane & Gillian made a list of everyone's concerns and said they will revisit them at various intervals during the implementation of the park and it's temporary existance. If they prove to be valid, they'll be addressed.

Andres also said that our list of concerns was almost identical to those voiced by residents during the discussion phase of the 17th Street Plaza. which is turning out to be a very successful community builder.

I am surprised by the number of people who claim to have no knowledge of the proposed park. I've lived in the neighborhood for 10 years and most of the faces I see on the street have been there longer than that.

For as long as I can remember, Gillian has been going door to door talking to local residents about greening the space under discussion. She has also been very active in emailing those who were actively involved in greening Guerrero

I am aware of several residents who knew of the meeting last night and made the choice not to attend. I would respectfully suggest that the meeting was attended by those who cared enough to take the time to walk down the block or cross the street.

Am I a native? No! Does that make any difference, not at all! I moved into the neighborhood because I liked it. Does that mean it's perfect and can't be improved? Definitely not! Gentrification? BS - can we really not make life nicer for everyone without being accused of doing it to raise rents/property vales?

People need take a more positive approach and give Guerrero Park a chance - we have the planning department's assurance that if it doesn't work, it will disappear and quickly as it will appear.

COME ON FOLKS - TRY FINDING A LITTLE RAY OF SUNSHINE In THIS OTHERWISE FOG BOUND CITY AND ECONOMY!

Brooke, I am sorry but,If you consider less the twenty people form a neighborhood of hundreds to be a packed house, Then I would have to agree!

Also If this idea has been "vetted" throughout the neighborhood for years then why is it that by the admission of Mr. Power from the planning department that not one residence had been notified by mail?

The argument that people just don't read their mail does not hold water with me.I only found out about this meeting the day before because I happened to be going to retrieve my mail just as a flier was being taped to my door!

This flier stated that the meeting was to "discuss" the park "PROPOSED" for this area. Then I arrived only to find out that the decision had already been made for us even though its being stated as only temporary. Why do I feel today as if the wool has been pulled over my eyes?

As I stated at the meeting I do not enjoy having access to my home restricted by closing one end of my street temporarily or otherwise.I fail to see how this park will have an effect on traffic calming and fear that by closing the intersection traffic will only speed up! I also fear the issues I have stated above. I hope that you will have the serenity you support directly below your windows. I guess only time will tell.

I realize that we are neighbors on the same block and despite the fact i do not agree with this project I can respect your right to an opinion and would like to be sure that all voices will be heard before it is too late. I would hope that before pushing an agenda that you and others feel the same!

I also attended last night's event and was impressed by the group of residents that attended. The cafe was packed and all seats were taken. This concept is hardly new, it has been vetted throughout the community for years, and the City Planning Department has consulted with every agency that has a stake in this project (St. Luke's, SFFD, the mayor's office, SFMTA, local residents and so on.)

I live right above the proposed plaza, which also makes me a "true resident of San Jose and Guerrero" and I'm thrilled for these greening and traffic calming efforts. For residents along the east side of the new plaza, you now have your own private access to your street, plus a nicer view from your front door.

Thank You Native!...As our great mayor once said " Whether you like it or not! The doors open now!". It seems as though this thing is a done deal as of Labor Day weekend. I attended tonights sparsely attended meeting and the decision has already been made for us even though it is claimed to be only on a "trial basis" and there were others that were also concerned. So I guess it is what it is. I just hope I am proven wrong about this project. Now i guess I will have to turn around on an already narrow street every time I wish to park across my own driveway. I have a half of mind to do a one lap streak around the grand opening just to add interest to the event! Stay tuned folks! It wont be pretty!
