BART Strike Appears Imminent As Board Votes to Impose Contract

The BART Board of Directors voted unanimously today to unilaterally impose terms and conditions of employment on members of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 1555, which represents up to 900 train operators, station agents and other workers, setting the stage for a potential strike as soon as tomorrow.
The move came after talks between management and the union fell apart last night, leading BART management to declare an impasse.
"This is a very difficult decision for any body of elected officials because it is always hoped you can reach an equitable and fair agreement with your employees," said Director Joel Keller following a closed-door executive session.
Jesse Hunt, the ATU President, has called a 4 p.m. news conference but has been quoted as saying his members could strike as soon as tomorrow. Other unions have pledged to honor the strike, and not cross the picket lines. ATU members voted to reject a contract offer Monday.
