If you look around you can find some tutorials on the internet on how to make a really easy magnet thing that you can put on your bike that makes your signal for these electromagnetic detectors as large as or larger than a car's

SF totally screwed up the traffic lights along the 3rd street light-rail line. They use video cameras for car detection, but can never detect a bicycle. The only way to make the light change is to go on the sidewalk and press the pedestrian button.

It's too bad they don't just use timed signals, it's only ever really an advantage when there is almost no traffic in either direction? Finally, is it really a good idea to turn city streets in to highways with essentially randomly changing signal lights?

FWIW, I find that putting my wheel *directly* over and parallel to the wire loop will trigger these, if you have metal rims.

I know exactly where that Marin City one is going to be, because I had to wait through 4 light cycles at that light the other week, until a kind driver pulled up in the lane next to me and triggered the light. Thank God.
