ZA, you can apply parking issues from Oakland Chinatown to SF's. I HIGHLY doubt even a slim minority of Chinatown customers drive. I bet it is more to protect the merchants who drive in and their workers from paying more to park while they work.

Given how vocal the Oakland Chinatown businesses appear to have been to restore the 6pm paid parking hours limit, I wonder where most of their customers actually live? Moreover, is it that handful of retailers that reflect the majority of Chinatown business?

Future Oakland has a great takedown of all these silly claims that the cost of on-street parking is dooming Oakland. (http://tinyurl.com/m78q5r)

So what will happen, I guess, is the Council will go back on its decision, parking will continue to be subsidized at the expense of other city departments, and at the end of it all the businesses will still be doing relatively poorly because parking was never the problem to begin with!

How offensive that Oakland's faux liberals will be demanding cheaper parking and more car traffic downtown on World Carfree Day.
