There has been a quiet backlash of sorts. All last week different cars were parked in that spot overnight. I'm sure they couldn't imagine why they would want to red zone a perfectly good parking spot. I fortell this becoming a more common problem once the Bike Plan gets implemented. It's sad--I want San Francisco to have a good paper--but I just can't take the dumbing down of the journalism anymore. I wish the De Young family hadn't sold out to Hearst. Heck, I wish Herb Caen were still alive. Print media seems to be collapsing all around us. What will rise from the ashes, I wonder? I think since they are, in a way, a legacy type of media they hold onto legacy types of transportation and legacy type outlooks on life in general. The car culture will not go quietly into the night, and the CW's and Garcia's will make sure it doesn't go down without a lot of kicking and screaming. John, I am just as lost as you. So how is it that the newspapers employ Garcia and Nevius? Perhaps the answer is that newspapers specifically want to NOT preach to the choir - so in fact what is published is the opposite of collective public opinion? Parking in my building is $300/mo. If you figure that my apartment costs me about $3/sq ft/month then an average parking spot, about 128 sq ft (16' x 8' which might be on the small side), should cost $384/spot/month. So in reality Mr. Garcia, residential parking at $78 annually is about 2% of the true cost for the space you are taking up. Granted that $300+/mo means that you have a dedicated, off street spot. However, the space used on the street is public space, paid for by the tax payer that you so righteously wish to protect. I'm of the opinion that if you want a place to store your private automobile, then you should pay closer to the market rate to do it.
