@mikesonn

the 4th to last & 3rd to last paragraph explains:

"the ban isn't actively enforced, but rather is an additional tool for officers to deal with misbehavior. "If a person is excluded, we're not going to be actively looking for that person," said Young. "But should they be noticed on the train during that time, especially disturbing other passengers, then we have an additional tool to remove them from the system."

"the policy wouldn't solve all of the behavioral issues on Regional Transit buses and trains, or on all of Muni's vehicles if the MTA tried it, but it's helpful nonetheless. "It would at least give the Muni another tool to try and combat those riders who do not follow the rules and break laws on the system. It would just be another tool to help your officers deal with that behavior."

It's kind of like a restraining order, tough to enforce, but if somebody is caught violating it then more severe actions can be taken.

It basically a trespassing warning, I imagine-- similar to what happens if you are a teenager who gets caught shoplifting in a suburban mall-- you get a trespassing warning for 6 months or 1 year, and really it only matters if you are caught by mall security guards doing something else... sounds OK to me. Can stop the habitual offenders (and will hopefully work in concert with the HOT teams to provide mental health services for those who need it, too...)

Is the driver going to say, "No MUNI for you!". How do you even begin to enforce this?

I think you actually have to get the police on the transit before you can start arresting people on said transit. But it would make a nice statement I guess. But SF is also a transit first city and that has become little more then a slogan for our gubernatorial candidate while he cuts transit funds and blocks parking reform. Lots of things sound nice and pretty, but unless there are some teeth, it's just for the suits.

"Anyone arrested for a crime" um... for a public transit agency, maybe you can start banning people once they get convicted in a court of law.

I'm going to be devil's advocate: If someone gets arrested on a public transit vehicle in which they are found not guilty or released and not charged; does that count as a strike to get banned?
