O'Shaugnessy is so nice to ride down in the morning if you ever get the chance. Where else can you ride over a mile downhill on a Class 1 Bike path in the city?

I would recomend it as a return route to the Mission if that's where you live. Turn onto Chenery, stop for some coffee, then pick up the San Jose path and the Valencia St bike lanes.

Awesome ride Chris! I'd also recommend a piece on the various slides in San Francisco, but umm, had my own run-in with a terribly angry resident near one last weekend.

If you don't live in the Mission (do people read blogs outside of the Mission?), but from Glen Park, Bernal, Upper Noe, St. Mary's Park, the Excelsior, etc, there is a much better way.

I think that heading up O'Shaugnessy, to Twin Peaks Boulevard is the best bike ride in the middle of the city. Head up O'Shaugnessy on the bike path, looking down into the Canyon. No crosstraffic, only an occasional 44, to bother you. Then head up Twin Peaks Blvd.

Yes, there is a big elevation gain, but never is there a steep grade. This is not just for hardcore bikers. Plus the way down is soooo fun, and fast.

Also, if you're hiking to the top (or on a mountain bike), you can connect directly to the Mt. Sutro trails, as shown on this excellent map.
