the lead in the SM Daily Journal story was unintentionally hilarious:

"Eastside San Carlos residents, worried a proposed mixed-use transit village around the existing Caltrain station will color their quality of life..."

Any time you build a building on the Peninsula more than two stories, or talk about building apartments or condos, the people down there scream "public housing" as a code word for "we don't want THOSE PEOPLE living near us".

It really is pathetic and I'm wondering what's in the water down there. Burlingame fucked up Safeway's plans to build a nicer store and include some market rate housing on top of the building. They processed the shit out of it and now Burlingame has a crappy safeway right in the middle of their stupid downtown that's boarded up because they pimped out to the chains.

The whole e-BART extension to Antioch has been badly handled. In the original design Antioch would have had a downtown (Antioch has a fairly dense pre WWII downtown) station and a very pedestrian oriented station at Hillcrest. With the design that is actually getting built Antioch will end up with no downtown station and a much less pedestrian friendly station (it will be so close to the Hillcrest interchange that lots more of the area within 1/4 mile of the station will end up being pavement rather than structures. Antioch will still try to build a transit village there but it won't perform nearly as well as it could have. Hopefully Antioch can find the money to extend e-BART a bit further and build the second station about 3/4 of a mile away that they're planning.
