This Week: Restoring Caltrain Service and SFTRU Fundraiser

This week, Caltrain fields input on plans to restore service, the SF Transit Riders Union holds a fundraising party, and Sunday Streets opens Valencia and 24th Streets once again. Also, don’t miss a talk next Monday with Gil Peñalosa, who helped pioneer the Sunday Streets-inspiring Ciclovia in Bogotá, Colombia.

Here are all the highlights from the Streetsblog calendar [1]:

  • Wednesday: Caltrain Service Increase Public Meeting [2]. Caltrain officials will shape a plan [3] to restore four trains in the weekday schedule, add two trains to the evening commute period, and add stops at Palo Alto and Sunnyvale on two regular runs. 6 p.m.
  • Thursday: SFTRU “Transit Trailblazers” Fundraiser [4]. Help support the San Francisco Transit Riders Union by joining District 5 Supervisor Christina Olague and founding members to “learn about the SFTRU’s big summer plans, mix and mingle with your fellow transit advocates, and eat and drink to your heart’s content.” 6 p.m.
  • Friday: SF Bike Party, Black and White Ride [5]. Put on your tuxedo, KISS make-up, and panda hat for a nighttime ride and celebration “in formal acknowledgement of the primacy of the colors black and white.” 8 p.m.
  • Sunday: Sunday Streets in the Mission (Part 2) [6]. Enjoy car-free Valencia and 24th Streets by foot and bike in the second of four consecutive Mission Sunday Streets, which will help assess the feasibility of opening the route on a more regular basis. 11 a.m.
  • Next Monday: An Evening With Gil Peñalosa [7]. If you enjoy Sunday Streets, hear from one of its pioneers: Gil Peñalosa, the former parks commissioner of Bogotá, Colombia, who in the 1980s helped initiate that city’s car-free “Ciclovia” events, which went on to inspire Sunday Streets. Mr. Peñalosa will join the Greenbelt Alliance to speak about ”his experience and passion for improving the quality of life and health for all residents everywhere through walking and cycling.” 6 p.m.
