Perspective missing from the “Cops sleeping in cars” article…there are plenty of professionals, in both the public and private sectors, who make similar wages and don’t live in Tracy and Antioch. Seems like cops place an especially high premium on owning a single-family home, to the point that they take these ridiculous commutes. The rest of us scrape by in apartments with housemates.

  • p_chazz

People should be free to choose their lifestyles. Cops who choose to live in single-family homes with yards probably do so because they have young families. They need room for swing sets and inflatable pools and want to live where there are good schools.

Your decision to “scrape by” in an apartment with housemates is your choice. What makes you think you should be able to impose it on others?

  • Flatlander

Who said anything about “imposing” anything? Those with long commutes are imposing on all of us with their congestion and GHGs. If you place such a high priority on a single-family home lifestyle with a yard, and you’re not in a field that makes $$$, then maybe SF isn’t the place for you.

The article frames it as cops being forced into this situation, when it’s really
a matter of their own choices and priorities.
