MTA Director Heinicke Proposes Sponsorship of Street, Cable Cars
MTA Director Malcolm Heinicke must have heard the recent calls from advocates like Tom Radulovich for the MTA Board to follow the charter and "diligently" seek out new sources of revenue, but his latest idea is raising quite a few eyebrows. At today's meeting, Heinicke, fresh from a trip to Chicago where he saw how some streets have honorary names, said he would like the MTA to explore offering "unobtrusive" corporate or individual sponsorships of street and cable cars.

Victor Mendez, nominated by the White House to lead the Federal

Eyes on the Street: More Hazards for Cyclists on Howard Street
DPW crews tearing up Howard Street have once again given short shrift to bicyclists, failing to put up proper signage and creating a dangerous mix of bicycle and car traffic on Howard just before 10th Street. I dig the new smooth ride on portions of Howard Street, even though the bike lane markings have not been repainted, presumably because of that tired excuse we call the injunction.

At the Edge of Commercialization: The Maker Faire
Following the siren song of the Fossil Fool, or expecting to anyway (he was very late!), I joined a surprisingly large contingent of San Francisco cyclists to ride the 20-odd miles to the Maker Faire at the San Mateo County Fairgrounds. Gray foggy skies kept us cool as we headed out, and right away the etiquette of a Critical Mass broke down, as we separated into ever smaller groups of cyclists, broken up by the red lights.

Using the Hive Mind to Make Biking Safer
Whenever anyone asks me why I like Twitter so much, I tell them it's
about the information. If you follow the right people (and who that is
obviously depends entirely on you) you can tap into an amazing amount
of great stuff from around the Internet (and real life too). It's like
having a custom-made news feed filtered through some very intelligent,
and idiosyncratic, human brains.
