BART Board Will Consider Increased Parking Fees to Address Budget Woes
At its monthly board meeting today, BART staff will present a number of options for closing its budget deficit, including a proposal to extend parking fees to stations that don't already have them. BART General Manager Dorothy Dugger will present the board with a preliminary operating budget for FY 2010, which will have a $23 million deficit. BART staff anticipate a four-year operating deficit of nearly $250 million, though policies enacted this year could lower that number to $139 million.

it's particularly divisive for the BART Board of Directors, who may be
debating a proposal from their finance committee as soon as next
Thursday's board meeting to raise parking fees to mitigate their
soaring budget deficit.

Using Software to Find Walkable Neighborhoods and Live Car Free
Though David Brooks might argue in his New York Times column that Americans want to live in small towns and suburban dreamscapes, the fact is more and more of us live in metropolitan areas, and discussions about what we want should have to do more with the context of those metropolitan areas. Brooks should be looking at the quality of the public spaces where people live, and the walkability and ease of transit in those neighborhoods.

Despite Outcry, MTC Board Approves OAK Connector Funds
Transportation and social justice advocates packed the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC) board meeting today to demand that the agency not spend a proposed $70 million of federal stimulus money on the Oakland Airport Connector (OAC) project. MTC commissioners heard testimony for over two hours from some of the more than one hundred members of the public who were mostly opposed to the OAC, claiming it would take money from the operations of AC Transit and other transit operators.

Radulovich Becomes Second BART Director to Call for GM’s Resignation
Tom Radulovich became the second member of the BART Board of Directors today to call for GM Dorothy Dugger's resignation. He cited, among other things, cell phone video uncovered over the weekend by KTVU that shows a BART police officer beating a man on the platform shortly before another BART officer shot and killed 22-year-old Oscar Grant.
