SFPD Issues Rare Press Release on Hit-and-Run Crash of Bicyclist, Young Son
The San Francisco Police Department -- in a rare public display of concern for bicyclists -- has issued a press release on the hit-and-run on Valencia Street last Wednesday involving a bicyclist and his 4-year-old son, who was riding in the back on a tandem extension. It asks for the public's help tracking down the driver of a "gray SUV or gray Chrysler PT Cruiser" (with a partial plate of "KAY" and a heart symbol) who is responsible for the crash:

Cop Parked in Bike Lane During Meal Break is “Proper Conduct”?
A San Francisco bicyclist who confronted a motorcycle cop over why he was parked in the bike lane on Market Street while on a meal break has received a dubious answer to his complaints from the Office of Citizen Complaints. Andrew Turley filed two complaints against the officer for "Conduct Reflecting Discredit on the Department," one for "being rude about parking in the bike lane" and the other for parking in the bike lane. We wrote about his story back in February. The official response is terse but telling:

Motorist Hits Cyclist in Valencia Street Bike Lane

was the scene of a crash on Tuesday, when an automobile incautiously pulled out
of a parking spot and struck a bicyclist riding in the bike lane on Valencia
Street near 20th Street.

New SF Police Chief Has Uncertain Livable Streets Credentials
Mayor Gavin Newsom, in a press conference today with most of the elected and appointed political class, named former Mesa Arizona Police Chief George Gascón to the top job in the SFPD. The mayor said the police commission had conducted 49 public outreach sessions and reviewed 88 total candidates for the job before sending the top three picks to his office.

MTA Releases MOU with SFPD
More than a month after it was promised, the MTA has released a memorandum of understanding (PDF) with the San Francisco Police Department, an agreement that will give the transit agency and its chief Nat Ford control over SFPD officers who are supposed to be patrolling Muni.

Ingleside PD Crosswalk Sting Results in Numerous Tickets, Tows
Ingleside Station's new captain, David Lazar, has renewed stings on motorists who fail to yield to pedestrians at intersections and crosswalks in his precinct, a popular practice among neighborhood residents that hasn't been employed since a previous captain left years ago, according to witnesses of the sting.

New Ingleside Captain Gets Tough on Drivers Failing to Yield to Peds
The Ingleside Police Station has a new captain and he's out of the blocks with a very progressive pedestrian safety agenda. Captain David Lazar, who just assumed his post at the Ingleside Station on April 18th, will conduct a sting on motorists who fail to yield to pedestrians in crosswalks at five locations today from 2:30-8:00 pm.

Mission Sunday Streets Expected to Draw Largest Crowds Yet
When tens of thousands of people come out to the first of two Sunday Streets in the Mission on June 7th, they will find a route that winds through some of the densest pedestrian streets in San Francisco, a route that at just over two miles is half as long as previous events and should lend to casual strolling perhaps more than cycling.
