Legislative Update: CTC Representation, Youth Transit Passes, GHG Emissions
As Friday's deadline approaches for bills to either be passed from their legislative house of origin or die, the halls of the capitol in Sacramento are getting hectic. Here is some of what has transpired in relation to sustainable transportation issues:

Caltrans District 4 Bicycle Plan: Meeting Tonight, Survey Ending
Caltrans District 4, which covers the nine counties in the San Francisco Bay Area, invites interested parties to attend a presentation on its progress towards creating a districtwide Bicycle Plan. The meeting, the third in a series, will take place tonight in San Jose, and can also be watched online.

A Multimodal Field Trip in Honor of CA’s New Bike and Pedestrian Plan
Caltrans Director Malcolm Dougherty was joined by Caltrans staff to mark the release of Caltrans' new statewide bike and pedestrian plan with a multimodal field trip: a train ride from Sacramento to Emeryville, and from there a bike ride on the Alex Zuckerman Bicycle/Pedestrian Path along the Oakland Bay Bridge to the new Vista Point on Yerba Buena Island.

Caltrans Adopts Statewide Bike and Pedestrian Plan
While Caltrans does not have jurisdiction over local transportation planning or policies, it does wield considerable influence over local planning decisions, and it provides expertise and guidance. A statewide plan that provides a cohesive vision for safe, comfortable biking and walking in California communities is an important step.

CA Transportation Commission Speeds Up ATP Allocations
The California Transportation Commission agreed to accelerate allocations to already approved ATP projects, and began considering how to spend new revenue from the recently passed transportation funding bill.

Happy Bike to Work Day in Oakland and Berkeley
Bike to Work Day (BTWD) organizers counted over 20,000 people biking to work today in East Bay cities, an increase of thirty percent over the last five years. Legislative Update: “Idaho Stop” and Pedestrian Signals to Be Heard Next Week
Two bills very pertinent to bicyclists and pedestrians are set for their first committee hearings in the California legislature on Monday's Assembly Transportation Committee. One would allow bike riders to roll through stop signs--when safe; the other would make clear that pedestrians are allowed to cross while their signals are counting down.

At close to midnight last night, the Berkeley City Council unanimously approved the Berkeley Bike Plan, which seeks to build a network of safe, connected bikeways throughout the city to encourage more people to ride bikes.

Celebrating the Opening of Yerba Buena Island Vista Point to Bikes
Some eighty cycling advocates, lawmakers, and transportation notables assembled this morning for a ride across the eastern span of the Oakland Bay Bridge, which as of today is open seven days a week. Destination: Yerba Buena Island Vista Point, a new park that offers a resting spot with expansive views for pedestrians and cyclists coming from Oakland.
