Oakland lawmakers will decide today whether to approve an important safe-street redesign for 14th Street in downtown Oakland. Streetsblog will update this post to reflect the result, however, given what happened Thursday evening, it seems imponderable that anyone on the council would vote against protected bike lanes.

Perhaps San Francisco should put up a sign for those trying to make its streets safer for cyclists and pedestrians: “Speed bumps ahead.”

If voters really want cities to get tough on crime, let's start with traffic violence

Officials in the Bay Area think by using inexpensive plastic and paint (and sometimes gently curving, concrete curbs) they're designing streets to keep everybody safe, motorists included. But what they're really doing is transferring the consequences of reckless driving from the perpetrators to everyone else. These past few weeks we've seen the tragic results.

Dangerous motorist behaviors, such as speeding, crosswalk incursions, and going the wrong way on a one-way street, are tolerated by law enforcement and a judicial system that basically never suspends or revokes the license of even the most egregious offenders.
