An Orlando woman is standing up to her neighbors who worry that opening their street to foot traffic will set off a crime wave — and sparking a conversation about who has the power to say who walks where.

America's walking rates took a nosedive during the pandemic — and they still haven't recovered.

"Instead of spending the month of October pre-blaming pedestrians for getting hit by cars, these agencies [should] actually do something to improve pedestrian safety."

In car-dependent Tennessee, SUVs and pick-ups aren't driving the pedestrian death surge — because roads are so fast that even the smallest cars will kill anyone they might strike.

PEDAL, a regional and international conference for transportation professionals, policymakers, active and multi-modal transportation advocates, will be held in Fresno on October 27.

Governor Newsom signed A.B. 413 into law on Tuesday. As explained in the Tweet below from the advocates at Los Angeles-based Streets for All, A.B. 413 will, in theory, make it illegal in California to park "within twenty feet of the vehicle approach side of any marked or unmarked crosswalk or within fifteen feet of any crosswalk where a curb extension is present."

Instead of proactively asserting a right for people to walk and roll safely and conveniently outside of a vehicle, the standards used to determine when and where to put safety infrastructure require people to either risk their bodies or experience harm before any paint or concrete are poured.

Allowing drivers to turn right on red is dangerous for pedestrians and cyclists. That's why it's banned overseas and why other cities, such as New York, have banned it locally. San Francisco needs to join the ranks of progressive cities that ban this unsafe practice.
