Local Advocates Mourn “Death of Transit” as Part of National Campaign
Transit advocates, transit riders, politicians, and religious figures mourned the continual underfunding of transit operations by staging a mock funeral for public transit above the 12th Street/Oakland BART station today. The event was tied to a national campaign led by Transit Riders for Public Transportation (TRPT), the Transportation Equity Network and Transportation for
America to pressure Congress to provide funding for transit operations.

Advocating for a Transpo Bill That Keeps Transit Riders Moving
Advocates in cities across the country are mobilizing today to support increased federal funding for transit service. Transit Riders for Public Transportation
(TRPT) a national coalition focused on bringing "environmental justice
and civil rights priorities to the upcoming federal surface
transportation act," is calling on representatives in the House to
co-sponsor H.R. 2746, which would allow transit agencies to spend more of their federal funds on day-to-day operations.

Cardin & Carper Bullish on Transit’s Prospects in Senate Climate Bill
Addressing a climate change forum this morning, two Democrats on the
Senate environment committee said they are pushing for transit and
other green modes of transport to get 10 percent of the revenue generated by the upcoming Senate bill regulating carbon emissions.

MTA Board Discusses Revenue Options to Cover $1 Billion Five-Year Shortfall
Facing a projected net deficit of over $1 billion by 2015, the MTA Board of Directors held a workshop today to consider potential new sources of revenue for the agency. MTA Chief Financial Officer Sonali Bose presented a variety of options (slideshow PDF), ranging from cruise ship fees to parking congestion impact fees, many of which have been discussed at previous MTA meetings.

Top 20 Metro Areas Get 28% of Road Stimulus, 61% of Transit Stimulus
Cities are getting a disproportionately small share
of the road money given out by the White House's stimulus plan, but the
nation's top 20 metro areas are doing better when it comes to transit
-- taking in 61 percent of the transit stimulus cash allocated so far,
according to an analysis by Streetsblog Capitol Hill.

SFO Commission Calls BART Surcharge for SFO Workers “Unconscionable”
The San Francisco Airport (SFO) Commission asked BART today to waive the new SFO surcharge for workers at the airport, whom they assert cannot afford to ride BART to work now. The new surcharge increased from $1.50 to $4.00 on July 1st with the 6 percent overall fare increase approved by BART's Board of Directors.

Senate Starts Climate Push With Nods to Jobs, Energy, and Transportation
The Senate is taking its first public steps toward combating climate
change -- and while the U.S. DOT was absent from this morning's
hearing, the chiefs of the Energy Department and Environmental
Protection Agency reminded lawmakers that transportation must play a
key role in any emissions reduction plan.
