SFMTA Unveils 6th St. Proposal With Road Diet, Bike Lanes, Wider Sidewalks
SFMTA unveiled a proposal last week to redesign northern Sixth Street by trimming traffic lanes from four to two, widening sidewalks, and adding unprotected, green-painted bike lanes. Intersections on the stretch between Market and Howard Streets could also get features like raised crosswalks, speed tables (like speed bumps, but wider), and textured pavement to tame driving speeds.

Eyes on the Street: Bike Lane Replaces Car Parking at Fort Mason
A new contra-flow bike lane separated by paint and plastic posts has appeared at the northern end of Van Ness Avenue, providing a safer link between the ped/bike paths that run through Fort Mason and Fisherman's Wharf.

SFPUC Unveils New Green Designs for Holloway, Plaza at Mission/Valencia
The SF Public Utilities Commission unveiled final redesign concepts last week for two projects that would mean more space for pedestrians and stormwater-absorbing greenery. One project will bring traffic-calming bulb-outs and "rain gardens" to the eastern stretch of Holloway Avenue, a major east-west bike route in Ingleside. The other would convert two traffic lanes at Mission and Valencia Streets into a new plaza with green bulb-outs that would extend to the entrance of the Tiffany bike boulevard, altogether creating what planners call a "Green Gateway."

In SF, Bay Area Bike Share’s Bikes Get Almost Three Trips Per Day
Following an underwhelming start, Bay Area Bike Share now sees an average of at least 2.5 trips per bike per day within San Francisco, according to the SFMTA. Since September 10, the average rate in SF has held mostly steady at about 2.7, and goes as high as 3.7.

SFMTA: Fell and Oak Bike Lanes Are Yielding Promising Safety Results
The SFMTA has released some preliminary survey results showing that the three-block bike lanes on Fell and Oak Streets, along with other safety measures, have resulted in calmer motor traffic, an increased sense of safety among bicycle commuters, and a decrease in illegal bicycling behaviors.

Inner Richmond’s First Sunday Streets Lively With Llamas and Humans
Despite the cloudy weather, Clement and Arguello Streets were bustling yesterday during the first Sunday Streets in the Inner Richmond -- the first Sunday Streets to come to the west side's neighborhood streets. (The other events have all been in Golden Gate Park and on the Great Highway.)

Haight-Market Contra-Flow Bus Lane, Ped Upgrades Coming Next Summer
Construction of a red contra-flow bus-only lane and pedestrian safety upgrades at the hairy intersection of Market, Haight, and Gough Streets is on track to begin in January and be completed next summer, according to the SFMTA. The plan to create a more direct route for riders on Muni's 71-Haight/Noriega and 6-Parnassus lines, approved by the SFMTA Board of Directors two years ago, is expected to come along with sidewalk bulb-outs, pedestrian refuges, and new greenery.

BART Lifts Bike Bans Permanently
BART has finally dropped its outdated policy of banning bicycles aboard trains during rush hours. After an uneventful four-month trial, the BART Board of Directors voted unanimously this morning to lift the bans permanently.

Shifting Direction, SFMTA Brings Bay Area Bike Share to New Neighborhoods
The next 15 Bay Area Bike Share stations to be rolled out in San Francisco won't fill in the system's existing downtown footprint as originally planned -- instead, planners have decided it's time to bring the system out to neighborhoods like the Mission, the Castro, Hayes Valley, and Mission Bay sooner than expected.
