rail, bus, and bike networks -- even as the prospects of passing a
comprehensive transportation reauthorization bill anytime this year
appear as dim as ever. Already, reauthorization of the transportation
bill is nearly a year overdue, as lawmakers have failed to muster the
will to pay for it.

New Jersey Transit Village Program Continues to Grow
The holy grail for many urbanists contemplating long-term development
and growth trends is the transit village. Adding growth adjacent to
functional transit has the benefit of making it easier for the new
population there to drive less and use transit for a multitude of trips.
Likewise, transit villages can add to ridership on the transit lines,
no small matter for operators seeking to maintain a consistent customer
base.

Berkeley Celebrates the Opening of a Beautiful New Bike Station
Berkeley cyclists and BART staff celebrated the grand opening of the new Berkeley Bike Station yesterday at 2208 Shattuck Avenue, one of the largest enclosed bicycle stations in the country and just steps from Downtown Berkeley BART.

Eyes on the Street: Hey Driver, Look, I Got the Light!
The one-way traffic sewers around my neighborhood on Sutter Street in the Tendernob (aka Lower Nob Hill) encourage speeding, so as you can imagine, there are constant near-misses by drivers intent on ignoring the pedestrian right-of-way. What you see in the photo above happened Monday evening on Sutter Street at Jones, as I was taking a leisurely stroll through one of the densest neighborhoods on the West Coast.

Mayor Newsom to Nominate a Respected Transit Advocate to SFMTA Board
