BART and Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) officials held opening ceremonies this morning at the Berryessa and Milpitas BART stations to mark tomorrow's launch of service of the first phase of a $2.3 billion San Jose extension.

With AC Transit shutting down at 7:30 p.m., and BART shutting down at 9 p.m., there is now no way to cross the Bay at night without a car

Just as SFMTA can easily replace light rail service with buses to respond to an emergency, the Bay Area should be able to quickly restructure service in a coordinated way to protect public safety and while ensuring essential workers can get to their jobs. Our region’s lack of an empowered lead authority for transportation means each transit agency makes decisions in silos, resulting less access for everyone — and a more challenging recovery.

Fare enforcement should be done with proof of payment alone, by unarmed civilian inspectors, as in Berlin. Some people will learn to dodge the inspectors, as is the case in Berlin, and that’s fine; the point is not to get fare evasion to 0 percent, but to the minimum level net of enforcement costs.

It's great that BART is working with TSA to offer a perk for riders, but it also highlights the failings of SFO transit that this is trying to compensate for.
