8th St. Buffered Bike Lane a Step Up, But When Will SoMa Really Feel Safe?
A new buffered bike lane was striped on 8th Street last week, re-purposing a traffic lane for bicycles on one of SoMa's fast, one-way motorways. The new configuration, which removes bicyclists from the door zone and provides a much wider lane, is an improvement over the four speed-inducing traffic lanes and skinny bike lane that previously existed. Still, many say it's just a small step toward a truly safer street.

SFTRU Launches Campaign to Inform Riders About All-Door Boarding
With Muni all-door boarding underway, other transit agencies are watching and bus riders are catching on -- hopefully. To ensure a smooth transition to the new policy -- which will help Muni maximize the benefits of faster boardings and higher fare compliance -- the SF Transit Riders Union has created a brochure explaining the rules and etiquette of the all-door boarding system.

CA Senate Approves Funds for High-Speed Rail, Commuter Rail Upgrades
In a pivotal vote Friday, the California Senate approved $4.5 billion in bonds to begin construction of CA High-Speed Rail (CAHSR) connecting San Francisco and Los Angeles. The funds will help fund construction of the line's initial segment in the Central Valley and upgrades for the Caltrain and Metrolink commuter rail lines in the Bay Area and Los Angeles, respectively.

SFMTA Stripes Bike Lane, Sharrows to Improve Holloway Bike Corridor
The SFMTA recently striped a partial bike lane and sharrows on a block of Lee Avenue connecting Ocean and Holloway Avenues in Ingleside. The improvements are a small piece of a plan to calm traffic and improve bicycling conditions on the Holloway corridor, which connects SF State University to City College Ocean Campus and the Balboa Park BART Station.

Muni All-Door Boarding, $2 Monthly Pass Hike Begin Sunday
Starting this Sunday, boarding the back of a Muni bus will be legal, so long as you pay. Transit advocates are excited to see the results of the long-awaited change, which will be the first of its kind in the nation. It's expected to significantly speed up boardings and increase fare compliance.
