New Parks, Skyscrapers, Wider Sidewalks, Protected Bike Lanes–all Part of South Downtown Plan
Guy Place Park, a small 'pocket park,' is now fully funded and will be built, said Paul Chasan of the San Francisco Planning Department, during a presentation last night on the South Downtown Design and Activation Plan (SODA), given at the Bay Area Metro Center on Beale Street. The new park will be built on a 4,000-square foot parcel near the intersection of 1st and Folsom, on a lot that the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department purchased in 2007.

Muni Subway Closures — Can’t We Do Better?
Here we are in week two of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA)'s month-plus of weekend and evening closures of the core of its system--the subway tunnel from Embarcadero to West Portal. Overcrowding on the replacement bus service, as the SF Examiner reports, has left customers further peeved. In response, SFMTA is adding longer buses to its substitute routes to alleviate some of it.

Caltrain Electrification Groundbreaking
"Some people hate trains," joked Governor Jerry Brown, at this morning's groundbreaking ceremony for the Caltrain electrification and modernization project, at the Millbrae Caltrain station. The audience of business leaders, well-known politicians, Caltrain staffers, high-speed rail people, and many others involved in the project laughed. "I didn't say the majority!"

Transit Watchers Question Need to Close Subway
The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) infuriated transit advocates when it announced on Saturday that it will close the entire Muni subway, from Embarcadero to West Portal, every weekend and after 9:30 p.m. during the week, for the next four or five weeks. The closures, which start this weekend, are part of a testing program for its new light-rail vehicles (LRV).

Fun, Bike-Share and Politics Mark Yesterday’s Sunday Streets in the Mission
Yesterday's Sunday Streets on Valencia Street in the Mission was Victoria Ruddick's first time on a Ford GoBike. "The handlebars and steering are a bit heavy," she said. Ruddick said she normally drives to work and wouldn't consider cycling on a normal day. "I'm scared of biking around cars."

Big Events, Like the Warriors Parade, Can Prove Transit’s Resilience
BART was ready. The city of Oakland was expecting 1.5 to 2 million people to pile into downtown this morning to celebrate the Warrior's NBA championship. Oakland is the geographic center of the BART system, so for most people it made sense to use BART for at least part of their trip in to the parade.
