Peninsula Bike Party Earth Ride

From Peninsula Bike Party:

Celebrate THE EARTH with Peninsula Bike Party! According to a random blog post I found, there are perhaps 10,000,000,000,000 planets in our galaxy and 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 planets in the entire universe. We bike just one: THE EARTH. 530 people have been in space, defined as 100 km above THE EARTH's surface by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale, and 12 of these people have walked on the surface of the Moon. Zero people have visited another planet. So there are still plenty left to explore. For now, we're exploring the EARTH on our BIKES, and more specifically, the San Francisco Peninsula part of THE EARTH. Bike Party! April 22 is the 44th annual EARTH DAY, which was proposed and promoted by Gaylord Nelson, U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, in 1970. Gaylord witnessed the disastrous 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill that killed thousands of sea birds, dolphins, sea lions, and other marine life and fouled 50 miles of southern California beaches as well as the nearby Channel Islands. EARTH DAY marked the beginning of the organized modern Environmental Movement, galvanizing millions of Americans outraged by the accelerating rate of oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, toxic dumps, pesticides, loss of wilderness, and rampant freeway construction over the previous decade. The resulting state and federal environmental regulations enacted in the early 1970's have resulted in cleaner air and water and protected hundreds of endangered species from extinction. The modern Bicycle Movement would have to wait a couple of decades to truly gain momentum, and the Bike Party Movement even longer, but now we're all BIKE PARTY HEROES!
