This Week: Celebrate Sunday Streets and Park(ing) Day

4:03 PM PDT on September 16, 2013

Now that summer has begun in San Francisco, it's a great week to get out for the return of Park(ing) Day and Tour de Fat. Also don't miss the celebration of five years of Sunday Streets and a visit from CNU President John Norquist to discuss the removal of highway 280.

Here are this week’s highlights from the Streetsblog calendar:

  • Tuesday: The SFMTA Board of Directors is expected to approve the Van Ness Bus Rapid Transit Plan following the green light given by the SF County Transportation Authority Board. 1 p.m.
  • Also Tuesday: Sunday Streets celebrates its five-year anniversary with a fundraising party including live music, raffle prizes, a short film screening, and more. Guests will include Mayor Ed Lee, former Mayor Gavin Newsom, and city supervisors. 6 p.m.
  • Wednesday: A webinar on the health benefits of congestion pricing in San Francisco, presented by staff from the SFCTA and the SF Department of Public Health. 10 a.m.
  • Thursday: Forum: Freeways Without Futures. John Norquist, president of the Congress for New Urbanism, is in town to speak at an event hosted by the Studio for Urban Projects on the prospects of removing Highway 280. Also on the panel will be Gillian Gillett, Mayor Lee's transportation policy director. 7 p.m.
  • Friday: Time again for Park(ing) Day, the annual San Francisco-born tradition of temporarily repurposing car parking spaces for public use. Of course, parklets are now commonplace in many SF neighborhoods, but this is the time for San Franciscans to showcase their creativity by designing a space of their own -- no permit required!
  • Saturday: What better way to enjoy the summertime weather than the return of New Belgium’s Tour de Fat, a festival of bikes, beer, music, and "dressing freaky" in Golden Gate Park. 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
