Bike to Work Day at City Hall: Lots of Pro-Bike Talk, Few Real Commitments
Elected officials and thousands of commuters took to two wheels for the 19th annual Bike to Work Day, welcomed by the new protected bike lane on Oak Street and the city's first bicycle counter on Market Street. As in the past few years, the mayor and city supervisors gathered on the steps of City Hall to give speeches cheering bicycling, with some calling for the implementation of more bike lanes.

Taxi Driver Reza Eslaminia Wanted for Vehicular Manslaughter
SF District Attorney George Gascón put out a call today for the arrest of Ezra Eslaminia, the taxi driver who killed 39-year-old Edmund Capalla last August when he caused a car crash at Eddy and Larkin Streets.

As has become painfully apparent on Polk Street, there is a deeply-held belief among certain merchants that car parking is indispensable to their business -- even if studies indicate that very few of their customers drive, and that removing parking spaces to implement safety improvements could actually draw more potential customers.

Supes Farrell and Cohen Have Yet to Grasp Why Free Parking Hurts SF
Mark Farrell and Malia Cohen emerged as the most vocal proponents of free car parking on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors at a hearing on parking meters last week. Farrell called the hearing in February based on an admittedly "unfounded" suspicion that the SF Municipal Transportation Agency was planning to install parking meters in District 2, which he represents.

SF Still Waiting for David Chiu to Stand Up for Protected Bike Lanes on Polk
Supervisor David Chiu has paid more lip service to making San Francisco a bike-friendly city than any other politician in recent years. Yet even as the SFMTA backs away from protected bike lanes on Polk Street -- which not only lies partially in Chiu's District 3, but also serves as his own bike commute route to City Hall -- San Franciscans have yet to see the Board of Supervisors president stand behind the vision he's touted.
