Re: Dumbarton Bridge, best thing to do would be to raise the toll. Or, if I was the mayor of East Palo Alto I’d put a toll on University, or demolish it. Why EPA allows a superfreeway to traverse a school zone is beyond me.

Re buses: I’d like to have Muni bus as an option to get to work, but it is seriously unattractive when it is only 5 minutes faster compared to walking the 4 miles between home and work.

  • RichLL

How could the new CalTrain cars not have toilets? Some of them run for up to 2.5 hours. And not all stations have a toilet while you wait. Unless they want passengers peeing into bottles, of course.

It’s a problem with BART. Twice I have had to get off a BART train to pee. One time the station had no toilet so I had to walk to the end of the platform and pee off the end, carefully avoiding peeing onto the 1000 Vdc third rail, of course.

As for the EastBay piece, I feel the same way. In SF I’ll take BART, a street-car or a cable car. But it takes a lot to get me onto a bus. Just don’t like them.

“Some of them run for up to 2.5 hours”

Are you seriously putting out this piece of troll bait? I mean, pretty much everyone except a couple of Caltrain staffers and Joel Ramos wants the bathrooms, but this is pretty funny.

  • Jeffrey Baker

To be fair, there is one 2.5 hour run.

  • RichLL

I suggest that you take a look at the timetable. For instance, the 5:28 pm train from SF arrives in Gilroy at 7:51 pm. That’s a journey time of 2 hours and 23 minutes.

Even the SF-SJ trains can take up to 90 minutes. A long time if you threw down a couple of beers before getting on the train

  • murphstahoe

The timetable I can look at is not relevant. The bathroom issue is for the new, electric trainsets, which will run 35% faster.

  • RichLL

There’s three in each direction that are about that long

  • murphstahoe

    Not after electriification.

  • murphstahoe

(the slam dunk answer by the way is – “I guess you’ve never been on Caltrain when it hits the car of some jerk who drove onto the tracks”)

  • RichLL

We’ll see how much faster they really will be. And of course there may be delays, like people jumping in front of trains, that mean the actual elapsed time can be much longer.

There should be bathrooms on any trip of more than an hour. The alternatives are worse. All of them.

  • RichLL

    See below.

  • murphstahoe

Bathrooms on Caltrain is something almost everyone can agree on. It’s pretty scary that two board members voted against them.

  • Jeffrey Baker

There’s really no excuse for any caltrain trip to be taking more than an hour, though. Let’s just shoot for getting all the trips under an hour.

  • p_chazz

Maybe you need to seek help for your condition: http://www.webmd.com/drugs/condition-3258-Increased+

  • david vartanoff

On Caltrain and WCs. YES!!! And rehab and reopen those in at least high usage stations.

  • david vartanoff

On the Dumbarton Rail project. Should have been up and running a decade ago. MTC needs to be hobbled.

  • p_chazz

The mayor of EPA doesn’t have the authority. University is State Highway 109.

  • p_chazz

As I recall the money for the Dumbarton Rail project study was diverted to BART’s Berryessa extension.

  • david vartanoff

On buses. Never will have the cachet of rail, but they can do the job if well operated. Unfortunately AC and others failed to reinstate real estate tax percentage support which died via Prop 13. Just imagine the funding even at 1/4 cent on the dollar. AC has been struggling to get buses on the street for over 2 decades of underfunding, not to mention self inflicted stupidity such as a sweetheart loan to the now on the lam GM and buying despicably designed Belgian buses.

  • Jeffrey Baker

Good point, I had forgotten about that designation. I wonder if it’s unique among state roads in having no signs whatsoever.

  • Richard Mlynarik

    “Despicably designed Belgian buses”

Oh, you mean the only remotely contemporary public transit vehicles that have operated anywhere in the Bay Area anytime in the last 70 years?

Low-floor, low-emission, designed for all-door loading (if not sabotaged by AC Transit), passenger-friendly, designed for maintainability (if not sabotaged by AC Transit), … decades ahead of anything else … it goes on and on.

The hissy fit thrown by a handful of elderly “transit activist” types when faced with something <bYURPEEN and FOREIGN would be hilarious if it hadn’t usefully played into the sleazy (and highly profitable) scams to force obsolete shitty “Buy American” products onto transit riders regardless of cost or quality. But, hey, useful “progressive” idiots have been doing their False Consciousness part for big business (and any other number of oppressors) since the beginning of time.

    Despicable Belgian pederast buses!

PS Here’s your “cachet of rail”, American Style: .

    Meanwhile, in Despicable Belgium …

It’s true, electrification will not be extended down to Gilroy. Those 2.5 hour runs will have bathrooms. Likely they will use the newer cars with a bathroom in each.

The electrics will run faster, and will only go as far south as San Jose.

I like having bathrooms on them anyway, but the longest runs planned for these trains will probably be just over an hour.

  • RichLL

Thank you for your concern about my plumbing. Seems to me design should be based on worst case scenarios, like seniors and commuters who have a few beers after work and then sensibly take the train home rather than drive.

Anyone with a condition probably wears a colostomy bag or commutes in diapers.

  • p_chazz

These were unsigned routes, but lately there have been signs showing up:

Willow Road in Menlo Park is SR 114
Davis Street in San Leandro is SR 112
High Street in Oakland is SR 77
