UC Berkeley’s First Bike to Campus Day

From EBBC:

Students and professors- Roll up your right pant cuff and hop on a bicycle Friday, September 9 to participate in UC Berkeley’s first ever Bike to Campus Day. Bike to Campus Day aims to get students, staff and faculty motivated to bicycle commute to campus. Both new and seasoned cyclists are invited to come celebrate bicycling as a fun, healthy and sustainable means of transport.

The first 100 people on bikes to visit Energizer Stations, open from 8am-10am at three locations on campus (North Gate, Bancroft @Telegraph, and Bancroft at Dana) will receive extra raffle tickets to enter a drawing to win a free bike among other wheel-y cool prizes.

All cyclists who stop at a morning Energizer Station will receive one raffle ticket and goodies. Prizes must be accepted in person at the Campus Bike Fair later that afternoon.

The celebrations continue with local cycling organizations, food trucks, helpful workshops, inspirational talks, and free live music at the Campus Bike Fair from 4pm-7pm on Lower Sproul Plaza. From 4-5pm various 15 minute talks and workshops will be offered from how to change a flat to how to prepare for a lengthy bike tour.

Following the talks and workshops, local musicians will be performing from 5-7pm on an off-grid, Pedal-Powered Stage from Rock The Bike and audience members are invited to help amplify the music by riding stationary bicycles. Throughout the event, BicyCal, the student bicycle cooperative, and Mike’s Bikes will be stationed on Lower Sproul to give free bike tune-ups. Students will also be able to learn about the various bike resources in the community, as well as possible cycling-related jobs and internships from non-profits like the East Bay Bike Coalition and Walk Oakland Bike Oakland who will be tabling at the event, all on lower Sproul.

Bike to Campus Day is coordinated by the student-run bicycle advocacy groups Campus Bike Initiative and BicyCal who have received a grant from The Green Initiative Fund to promote bicycling as a sustainable form of transport on campus. Goals include reducing transportation CO2 emissions by 1% and increasing the fleet of campus cyclists by 450 riders. The number of participants at Bike to Campus Day will be will be one of the metrics used to calculate campus ridership.
