The BART Board of directors spent two and a half hours this morning debating and hearing from staff and constituents about a proposed $1.6 billion extension of the Dublin/Pleasanton branch to Livermore.

The San Francisco Transit Riders (SFTR) released the results of its "Ride the Vote" survey yesterday. It reveals the stated positions of the mayoral candidates and District 8 candidates on local and regional transit issues.

Imagine if the Bay Area's 27 transit agencies took the same tickets, billed passengers by the same rate for distance traveled, and all the rail, bus, and ferry systems operated under a single brand as far as the rider was concerned.

"You're going to need a bigger boat," goes the famous line from Jaws. But maybe when it comes to transportation, the opposite is true.

State Senator Scott Wiener's transit housing bill, S.B. 827, was defeated by a six-to-four vote in the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee yesterday. "While I’m disappointed that Senate Bill 827 won’t be moving forward this year, I’m heartened by the conversation it has started, both with those who support the bill and with critics of the bill," wrote Wiener, in a prepared statement about the vote. "The passion we have seen around this bill is driven by what we are all feeling--that California’s housing costs are unsustainable and our housing policies aren’t working. California needs to get at the heart of our housing shortage, not just work around the edges, or we will become a hollowed out state with no middle class."

Senator Scott Wiener has revised S.B. 827, the Transit-Rich Housing Bonus, his bill to allow more housing near public transportation.

The 38 Geary is probably best-known for its notorious overcrowding, bunching, and delays--problems the agency is trying to remedy with this project.

The best examples of Regional Rail, he said, are the Paris Réseau Express Régional (RER) and the S-Bahn in Germany.
