Start the new year right with a packed week of livable streets events that span the spectrum from national monuments to Web 2.0. Here are the highlights:
- Tuesday: Learning from Washington D.C.: Monumental planning and thriving TODs. Find out how Washington D.C. is planning for its next 100 years, and how the region’s suburban transit oriented development may or may not be a model that other regions can draw upon. 12:30 p.m.
- Tuesday: SFBC Treehouse Talk: Biking Book Club. Interested in reading bike and transportation books and engaging in robust discussions with other friendly folks? Join this Treehouse Talk and official launch of its new book club. Come to the meeting with ideas for great books to read. The club will meet and start a reading list of favorite books like Traffic, The Parking Myth, and more. 6 p.m.
- Wednesday: SFBC Phone Banking. Volunteer to phone bank with the SFBC: no cold calling, just simple reminders to lapsed SFBC members that their membership is expired. 5-8 p.m.
- Thursday: Transit on the Information Highway: Web 2.0 and the public process. Andy Nash, a veteran transportation and land use planner based in Vienna, Austria, will present his latest research on how Web 2.0 has improved planning, efficiency and reliability and public participation. Nash’s talk will build on his past experiences conducting research at ETH Zurich’s Institute for Transport Planning and Systems and, in the 1990s, as executive director of the SFCTA. 12:30 p.m.
- Saturday: Different Spokes Monthly Jersey Ride. Join Different Spokes, the San Francisco Bay Area’s GLBT cycling club for its monthly Jersey Ride. All are welcome. 8:30 a.m.
- Saturday: “Street Utopia” – Film and Food Festival (North Beach). Street Utopia is an “urban design festival showcasing film, food, and art that promotes Democracy & Egalitarianism in the public spaces of North Beach.” 5:30-9 p.m.
